How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING

If you’ve ever heard me speak at a conference, you’ll know that I am a believer in the truism:

How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING

When people ask me how best to read others, this phrase always comes to mind. Of course, you will need to observe your subject – ideally in a number of circumstances to get a ‘Baseline’. But once you see a theme develop you can do a reasonable job of predicting future behaviour.

And the clues are not just in observing someone’s behaviour. Listen to how people categorise, restrict and even define themselves through the use of their language. Perhaps you have heard someone say one of the following… (perhaps YOU do…?):

I am never going to…

I’m not someone who…

I’m no good at…

I love being…

I always do…

You know me; I’m…

I can’t stand…

You’ll always find me…

I’ll never understand why…

Get the idea?

A good friend of mine tells the story of waiting at the airport baggage reclaim. He says that as the carousel started up, the first item on the conveyor was… a handle! No case – just the handle.

He says he observed four basic types of behaviour: (overview of colour types here)

People with high RED energy scowled and said; “That had better not be off one of MY suitcases or there’ll be trouble!”

Those with high YELLOW energy laughed and pointed it out to their friends and family; “Ha! Look at that… Hilarious!”

Our friends with high GREEN energy raised eyebrows and gasped as they said; “Oh the poor owner of THAT bag…”

People with BLUE energy said nothing but simply reached into their travel wallet and checked that their travel insurance covered such eventualities…!

See how it works?

Yoo wisdom: A recently posted suggestion on Social Media rung true for me. It was posted by a young lady who was clearly reporting on her search for a suitable partner. She said: “You will know the measure of a man by how he deals with three situations. A clumsy waitress, a rainy day – and tangled Christmas tree lights!”
